Besides the obvious Stay Home. In the past few years both of mine went with friends in a semi-supervised way to different parts of country Victoria - other families had organised something each time. Lucky me! As far as who started it I can recall it mentioned on the radio when I was still at school in the very early 80s. Responder

its a right of passage, no one is forced to attend. Many of them have payed their own way from weekend and after school jobs and saved all year.
Its all in good fun.

Run away from the place as fast as you can.
Schoolies is nothing more than a debauched money making scheme to rob young people of dignity and respect and their parents money.
The businesses who support this sick depraved week, should be ashamed of themselves.
It leads to drunkeness, brain damage, violence, accidents gang rapes, unwanted sexual attention and maybe sexual diseases, shame, loss of self esteem and so many problems, waste of the police time and the cost to the taxpayers - and has been promoted by big business - alcohol sales and trashy gold coast accommodation outlets.
And who started this stupid idea anyway?
If anyone thinks that this is the way to send off our young people into the working world, then they would have to have rocks in their head. If I had teenagers living in that place, or anywhere, I would not be giving them money to attend this garbage event. I would take them on a holiday somewhere to actually see something of the real world, not the phoney world of alcohol, drugs and unwanted sexual attention and violence.
I just find it hard to believe how any parent would put money on this for their precious children to attend this trashy event. Do they love their children or not? I just wonder.
